Boxing has its own "Original Eight" weight boxing division less than middleweight divisions, also known as the "traditional", "classic", or "glamour" divisions. The weight at which a boxer is assumed to be a heavyweight fighter would be adjusted a few times over the course of the subsequent years, specifically in 1920 by the New York Walker Law to 175+ pounds, 190+ pounds in 1979 by the World Boxing Council (WBC), and at last by the World Boxing Organization (WBO), International Boxing Federation (IBF), and World Boxing Association (WBA), together to the current weight of 200+ pounds. People that are far heavier than average on this scale are sometimes referred to as super heavyweights.

It was partly a reflection of the bewildering number of boxing belts available when the oldest major sanctioning organisation in the world, the World Boxing Association, announced plans in late 2021 to reduce the number of titles it offers.

Former Muay Thai fighter Knockout CP Freshmart was pronounced the inaugural WBA Super strawweight champion in February 2020 after carrying out seven of his 11 defences so far in the three-and-a-half years before then.

The 33-year-old owns 21 KOs in 29 light heavyweight fights, and he appears to be a more formidable puncher at his new weight. But his power figures to be no match for Beterbiev, perhaps boxing's most imposing puncher.

In the co-feature to Inoue-Doheny, Yoshiki Takei retained his WBO bantamweight title with a close unanimous-decision win over former flyweight champion Daigo Higa, who scored an 11th-round knockdown. Takei (10-0, 8 KOs), who also defeated Jason Moloney in May, moves up one spot to No. 4, while Higa (29-3-1, 19 KOs) enters the rankings at No. 10.

The World Boxing Association (WBA) was founded in 1921 as the National Boxing Association (NBA), a national regulating body of the United States. On August 23, 1962, the NBA became the WBA, which today has its head office in Panama. According to WBA championship rules, when a champion also holds a title of one of the other three major sanctioning bodies in an equivalent weight division, that boxer is granted a special recognition of "Unified Champion", and is given more time between mandatory title defenses. The WBA Championships Committee and President may also designate a champion as a "Super Champion" or "Undisputed Champion" in exceptional circumstances; the standard WBA title is then vacated and contested between WBA-ranked contenders. When a WBA "Regular Champion" makes between five and ten successful defenses, he may be granted the WBA "Super" title upon discretion of a vote of the WBA's board of governors.

Boxing Monthly and World Boxing News both acknowledged that Fury was still the lineal champion. The TBRB viewed it slightly differently, stating that abdicated his TBRB crown on the day that he vacated his Alphabet titles – however, it should be remembered that, as the sanctioning bodies were about to strip him, Fury was simply beating them to the punch. As with the Adamek example outlined above, there is a difference between essentially being forced to relinquish an Alphabet belt, and vacating the true lineal title.
